How does a mug rug differ from a regular coaster?
They’re usually bigger than a coaster and this provides a place to set your bagel, your toast, or your stack of cookies without worrying about the crumbs.
This pattern is so versatile you can change the size, simply by increasing your starting chain. If you want it smaller, just reduce your starting chain! The finished size if worked as the pattern is written, is approximately 6’’X9’’.
You can pair this mug rug with your favorite drink and bagel, cookie or treat. The color combinations you can use for this mug rug would be endless. I can see using some great fall colors for the autumn, or some bright cheery colors for this summer.
This would also be a great stash buster project too! Since the amount of yarn is so small you could easily combine some scraps into this fun rug.
(And btw, who else needs a cute mug like this in their life? This could be my mantra…)
Materials Needed:
Yarn: Two colors in the yarn of your choice. This pattern is worked with a double strand of yarn. It can be worked in a single strand, but the size will be different.
Any worsted weight #4 yarn will work great. Some great ideas are Red Heart Super Saver, and I Love This Yarn! from Hobby Lobby.
Hook: Size Size: I/9 – 5.5mm
Yarn Needle & Scissors
Abbreviations:
Sc– Single Crochet
Hdc- Half Double Crochet
Sl st- Slip Stitch
Ch- Chain
To Begin:
In double-stranded color A, ch 21
Row 1: hdc in 2nd ch from hook, and in every stitch across. Ch 1, turn.
Row 2: hdc in each stitch across, ch 1, turn
Change to color B (Here’s a quick tutorial on how to change colors)
Row 3: hdc in each stitch across, ch1, turn.
Change back to color A
Row 4-9 Repeat sequence above
Change back to color A
Row 10-11: hdc in each stitch across.
When you reach the end of row 11, change back to color B.
Border: In double-stranded color B, sc in each stitch across, and when you get to the corner, add 3sc in one stitch. Continue around the whole piece until you get back to the start. Sl st in the first sc, and tie off. Break yarn and weave in ends.
Tassels: At this point, your project can be finished if you don’t want to add the tassels in the corners. But I think this adds a cute little finishing touch.
Cut 4 strands of color A and 4 of color B. Make sure they’re at least 10’’ long so you have some room to work.
Pull all the strands together and fold in half. Using your crochet hook, loop the hook under the sc in the corner and loop the yarn through and pull tight. Trim the tassels to the desired length.
And that’s all there is to it!
