What’s the first thing you think of when someone says “granny square pattern”? I know for me, it was always this ugly old orange blanket my grandmother had in her linen closet that would get hauled out at every family get together.

It was the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen, yet somehow it was the warmest thing in the world to snuggle up under.

The humble granny square has been through the wringer and is often discredited as being “old” or “outdated” or “for grammas”! However, in recent years as crochet has started becoming more popular again, we’ve seen a resurgence of new modernized granny square pattern ideas that have come from some very talented designers.

For instance, check out this awesome granny square pattern from Repeat Crafter Me. The whole jacket is made with granny squares!

Even the granny square pattern ideas for single squares are amazing! Check out these great examples of modernized granny squares.
