What’s the first thing you think of when someone says “granny square pattern”? I know for me, it was always this ugly old orange blanket my grandmother had in her linen closet that would get hauled out at every family get together.

It was the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen, yet somehow it was the warmest thing in the world to snuggle up under.

The humble granny square has been through the wringer and is often discredited as being “old” or “outdated” or “for grammas”! However, in recent years as crochet has started becoming more popular again, we’ve seen a resurgence of new modernized granny square pattern ideas that have come from some very talented designers.

I hope this has helped change your mind about what a granny square is, or what kind of hidden potential it holds! Because I’m about to show you the best, easiest granny square pattern that you’re going to love.

It’s a solid square, so no toes going through the gaps in these blankets!

Solid Granny Square Pattern:

To start off, ch 3, sl st in 3rd ch from hook, ch 2

(3 stitches per side, 12 stitches total)

Round 2. *3dc in the ri

g you just created, then ch2,* Repeat the whole sequence three more times for a total of four sections. Join, ch 2

(7 stitches per side including corners, 28st total)

Round 3: 1dc in each st

across until corner, 2dc in the space, ch2, 2dc all in the same space, continue putting 1 dc in each stitch around your work. Join, ch 2

(11 stitches total per side including corners, 44 st total)

Round 4: 1dc in each st

across until corner, 2dc in the space, ch2, 2dc all in the same space, continue putting 1 dc in each stitch around your work. Join Ch 2.

(15 st total per side including corners, 60 st total)0

Round 5: 1dc in each st

across until corner, 2dc in the space, ch2, 2dc all in the same space, continue putting 1 dc in each stitch around your work. Join, break yarn, weave in ends.
